A headless/SSH box can show a world-writable /run/pcscd/pcscd.comm
(srw-rw-rw- root root) and still be denied: pcscd enforces its PolicyKit
policy, whose defaults allow only active local sessions. The startup
report, the start.sh pre-flight and the README troubleshooting now name
the exact rule (99-pcscd-allow.rules, org.debian.pcsc-lite.access_pcsc
and access_card) and explain why the socket mode does not matter. The
pcscd-group instruction is gone: there may be no such group, and it is
not the gate. The group route stays only as a note for a pcscd built
without PolicyKit.
Tests: tests/test_pcsc_startup.py asserts the polkit action IDs, the
rule filename and the 0666-socket explanation.

When no reader was named and readers() failed (e.g. SCARD_E_NO_ACCESS -
the user may not use pcscd), the auto-detect swallowed the error and pySim
fell back to the Serial transport, failing on /dev/ttyUSB0 while the
server still printed "listening". The startup now probes PC/SC,
classifies the failure by hresult (access/service/reader), reports the
cause with the pcscd group/polkit and pcsc_scan guidance and exits 2; the
python -m guard uses sys.exit(main()). An explicit -d/--device keeps the
serial path; a reader without a card stays a normal cardless start; a
readerless start exits with its own message.
start.sh runs the same access pre-flight before launching (readers() with
a 3x retry for socket activation; -d is detected and skips it). READMEs,
CHANGELOG (folded into the unreleased 3.38.1) and AGENTS updated.
Tests: tests/test_pcsc_startup.py (16: the error classifier, the probe,
the report guidance, the serial-arg detection and the source pins).

start.sh tees its console (exec > >(tee ...)) and exports PYTHONUNBUFFERED
so the log stays live; start.bat does the same through PowerShell
Tee-Object (UTF-16 on PS 5.1, UTF-8 on PS 7+). The log carries card keys
and request payloads of the test cards, so it is gitignored and must not
be committed - read it for the latest server output instead of
copy-pasting the console.
Streams every APDU the server sends or receives as GSMTAP-SIM UDP packets,
so a live capture can be followed in Wireshark or the SIMtrace Analyser
without a hardware sniffer. CLI-only: --gsmtap [HOST[:PORT]], default
target 127.0.0.1:4729; no UI or API.
- pysim_simple_server/gsmtap.py: 16-byte big-endian GSMTAP-SIM header
(type 0x04, sub_type 0x00 = APDU / 0x01 = ATR) + raw APDU bytes, a
fire-and-forget non-blocking sender that never raises into card I/O, an
ApduTracer (a response is sent as data + SW1SW2, the wire form) and a
fan-out tracer. The packet layout is byte-identical to
sigrok-iso7816-stream / simtrace2-sniff (verified against the sigrok
module) and is what the analyser's GSMTAP receiver expects.
- __main__.py: --gsmtap option, tracer installed on the shared transport
before the first APDU, combined with --apdu-trace via the fan-out and
re-attached across equips (pySim nulls the tracer on every equip); one
ATR packet per equip from _apply_equipped_card/_send_gsmtap_atr.
- start.sh/start.bat: forward their extra arguments to the server, so
./start.sh --gsmtap works.
- tests: packet layout, loopback UDP delivery, tracer mapping, target
parsing, fan-out; docs (READMEs, help EN/RU, AGENTS); version 3.1.0,
sw.js simple-v235.
__main__.py:
- Probe smartcard.System.readers() before init_reader when no reader
was explicitly specified
- Retry 3 times with 2s delay to handle late pcscd startup and
USB enumeration delays
start.sh:
- Also match pcscd.bin process name (some distros)
- Wait 1s for pcscd if not running yet
